Yamazaki River Hanami: Nagoya’s Finest Cherry Blossom Walk

cherry blossom hanami

The cherry blossoms are in full bloom in Nagoya right now! The best time to see them is probably until this weekend. If you happen to be near Nagoya, make sure to visit before they are gone!

Today, I went for a cherry blossom (hanami) walk along the Yamazaki River in Nagoya. It’s a famous spot selected as one of the best in Japan.

Yamazaki River, Nagoya (山崎川)
The Yamazaki River is famous as one of Japan’s “Top 100 Cherry Blossom Spots.” About 550 cherry trees line the river for 2.5km between Ishikawabashi (石川橋) and Ochiaibashi (落合橋) bridges. Nighttime illuminations are also held during the season.

Access: 10-15 minute walk from Mizuho Kuyakusho Station on the Sakura-dori Subway Line

I walked all the way from Ishikawabashi to Ochiaibashi, with an onigiri (rice ball) lunch break along the way. Here is my easy Hanami Onigiri recipe ;p

🧳 Plan Your Visit — Yamazaki River Hanami Walk

📍 How to get there: About 18 minutes from Nagoya Station to Mizuho Kuyakusho on the subway Sakura-dori Line (¥270 one way, no transfers), then a 10–15 minute walk to the river.

Time needed: A couple of hours at a slow hanami pace — the cherry trees line the river for 2.5 km between Ishikawabashi and Ochiaibashi. Longer if you bring a picnic like I did.

💰 Budget: Basically free — just the round-trip subway (¥540) and whatever you pack for a picnic.

🗓 Best time to visit: Late March to early April — the bloom window is short, so watch the forecast. I walked it at full bloom in early April. Nighttime illuminations are held during the season, too.
